By now we’re all familiar with the warnings about mercury in fish and canned tuna fish – that deli counter staple – has been particularly targeted by these warnings because of how frequently most of us consume it. Now it seems we should be even more cautious when it comes to tuna fish as the canned variety has been found to have even more mercury than previously thought.
Consumer Reports recently tested 42 samples of tuna from cans and pouches and found that every sample contained mercury, in amounts ranging from 0.018 to 0.774 parts per million. While the FDA won’t issue a recall unless the mercury content reaches 1 ppm or more, the levels found in this test amount to more than we should consume. Just 2.5 oz of white tuna exceeds the EPA safety threshold while 5 oz of light tuna (which is generally lower in mercury than the albacore variety) would be over the limit. The levels of mercury found in white tuna were also higher than previous tests performed by the FDA in 2002-2004.
Mercury, which finds its way into our waterways from coal plants, volcanos, and other sources, accumulates in fish in the form of methylmercury. When we eat the fish, we ingest the mercury as well. The primary danger of overexposure to mercury is neurotoxicity. Fetuses, infants and children are  most susceptible to the effects of mercury, and it’s consumption can lead to developmental delays including impaired cognition, motor skills, memory, language, attention and visual spatial skills.
This is not to say that we should eliminate fish from our diets altogether. Fish, after all, is an important part of a healthy diet, providing a great source of protein and heart-healthy, brain-boosting omega-3 fats. Although the following guidelines for fish consumption have been established with children and women of childbearing age in mind, everyone should make low-mercury choices when possible:

• Light tuna is usually lower in mercury than white tuna, and therefore a better choice.
• When it comes to canned tuna, young women and children should limit their intake.
• Children under 45 lbs should consume less than 4 oz of light tuna or 1.5 oz of white tuna per week.
• Pregnant and breast feeding women should eliminate tuna from their diets entirely.
• Avoid shark, swordfish, king mackerel, orange roughy, marlin, and tilefish
• Eat up to 12 oz (~2 servings) of low-mercury fish per week. Low-mercury fish include salmon, shrimp, catfish, pollock, anchovies, crab, haddock, sardines, oysters, tilapia, and trout

Kentucky Aims to Become ‘Sanctuary State’ for Big Coal

Lawmakers push back against EPA enforcement of Clean Water Act, advance bills protecting mountaintop removal

Just days after a group of activists ended a four-day occupation of Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear's office to protest the state's support of mountaintop removal mining, two bills advanced in legislative committees on Thursday that would make it easier for coal companies to continue the controversial practice. One of the bills advancing would declare Kentucky “a sanctuary state” from the EPA’s “regulatory actions against coal-producing counties.”
Introduced by chairman of the Senate Natural Resources and Energy Committee, Brandon Smith (R), Joint Resolution 99 passed by a vote of 9-0 Thursday and could be considered by the full senate as early as Friday.
Smith said he got the idea for the resolution after hearing about "sanctuary cities" that declare themselves exempt from federal immigration law.
"We're doing it to raise awareness of the fact that the federal government is overreaching into parts of our economy and it's having a negative impact on Kentucky," Smith said.
Also on Thursday, the Kentucky House Committee on Natural Resources and the Environment unanimously approved a bill that seeks to exempt coal mines that sell coal for use in Kentucky from the federal Clean Water Act. That bill, as well as the "sanctuary state" bill, were both introduced as a reaction to stepped-up enforcement of Clean Water Act regulations by the Environmental Protection Agency under the Obama administration.
But opponents of the two measures note that the EPA is merely enforcing regulations already on the books and that the only reason the Obama administration appears to be clamping down on mountaintop removal mining is that under the Bush administration regulations governing went under-enforced.
"One of the deepest, most urgent instructions that we receive from our cultural tradition is the imperative to be a good neighbor, and this is ignored as an official policy by the coal companies—and therefore, by their government allies," said the well-known writer, farmer and cultural critic, Wendell Berry, one of the thirteen people who occupied the governor's office over the weekend.
But Berry remains cautiously optimistic about the future of the pro-mountain, anti-coal movement in Kentucky, saying in a recent interview, "It takes a long time to make these changes, sometimes, and we have to be prepared to keep it up for a long time."

Is Diet Soda Really the Healthier Soft Drink?

New study finds link between drinking diet soda and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke

The premise: Many soda drinkers opt for diet over regular, thinking that the zero calories and zero sugar makes the drink a healthier option. But the scientific evidence backing up that idea is lacking. In fact, a 2005 study reported that people who drink diet soda instead of regular don’t lose any extra weight. Rather, they gain weight. Now, a new nine-year study finds a connection between drinking diet soft drinks and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
The set-up: Researchers gathered 2,465 subjects. The average age was 69 and about two-thirds of the participants were women—but the findings are still applicable to you. “We didn’t see any interaction with age or sex,” says study researcher Hannah Gardener, ScD, an epidemiologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. “Therefore there’s no reason why the results would be different for younger, male subjects.”
At the start of the study, people were asked to document what foods and beverages they consumed and how often they consumed them. They were asked about their exercise routines and whether they smoked or drank alcohol. And the participants had physical checkups.
With the preliminary research in: 901 participants said they never drank soda or drank it less than once a month, 282 said they drank at least one regular soda daily and 116 reported they drank at least one diet soda a day.
The results: Over the next nine years, those who drank diet soda daily were 48 percent more likely to have a heart attack or stroke, compared with those who rarely drank soda. There was actually no risk increase for cardiovascular disorders among the daily drinkers of regular soda.
“We had a strong bias for conducting the study, as other diet soda studies have suggested an association between diabetes, weight gain, coronary heart disease and other ailments, but we were surprised to find the strength of the results,” says Gardener.
A few flaws in the study are worth noting: Participants were only asked about the soda habits at one point (they may have changed habits at some point during the nine years) and there’s no information about which soft drinks were being consumed. And even though the researchers tried to consider for risk factors that that could skew the results, they couldn't account for everything.
The takeaway: Despite the overwhelming results, the study doesn't prove cause and effect. Meaning, it’s too early to recommend swapping a diet soda for a regular calorie-heavy soda. “I actually don’t think you should drink any soda at all,” Gardener suggests. “I’d always recommend a glass of water over any other beverage.”

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Breast Milk Ice Cream

This ice cream is local, natural and totally free-range, but will the health department approve? Icecreamists, a shop in London's Covent Garden, today began selling ice cream made from breast milk.
Called "Baby Gaga," it's made with Madagascar vanilla pods and lemon zest then served in a martini glass with liquid nitrogen piped in through a straw. It doesn't come cheap: £14 (~$23) per serving. The milk comes from mothers who answered an advertisement on Mumsnet. (£15 per 10 ounces, and donors had to undergo a health screening.)

I'm not sure it warrants the £14 price tag. But it tastes fantastic. Light and creamy with just enough of a vanilla tinge... this ice cream tastes better than almost any I've had before... this might catch on.

In fact, Baby Gaga was so popular, it sold out, according to the Daily News. Their milkshake really does bring all the boys to the yard.
