Nikon's D3100 is perhaps the best-rounded entry-level dSLR on the market right now. In addition to all the typicaly benefits of a dSLR -- quick right now. In addition to all the typicaly benefits of a dSLR -- quick performance, excellent image quality, unparalleled control -- the D3100 has a bunch of extra goodies like 1080p HD video, live view, and a user-friendly Guide mode to help inexperienced photographers get the shots they want, and learn a thing or two about using a dSLR along the way. It's one of the smallest and lightest dSLRs out there, and has an excellent 550-shot battery. And since Nikon has five generations of entry-level dSLRs under their belts, the D3100's interface and control scheme are as refined as they come -- it's a charm to use. Selling for about $600 these days, this is an excellent deal. The entry-level interchangeable-lens genre is much richer than it was a few years ago, thanks to new competition from the burgeoning mirrorless class as well as worthy dSLRs from Pentax and Sony, but the D3100 remains a sure-bet. |

Scores of casual photographers want a compact camera with a long zoom that takes decent shots in bad lighting. That's a tough one to pull off, but the S8100 comes reasonably close. It's built around a versatile backlit CMOS sensor, which allows for better low-light images, fast shooting (10 frames per second here) and full 1080p HD video. On the other hand, it's not a particularly great daylight shooter, and the lack of manual control (no shutter or aperture priority modes) is frustrating. Still, it's a great compromise for the folks that absolutely have to have a compact zoomer that can take decent pictures from the back of a concert hall. For our money, it's a better bet than the similar Canon SD4500.

Nikon's P500 rockets into the 2011 superzoom arms race, packing a BSI CMOS sensor and the most versatile lens we've ever seen on a camera like this. Like other BSI CMOS superzooms, the P500 should be a snappy performer and do relatively well in low light settings, and will shoot 1080p video. The lens on this thing is unreal, starting at 22.5mm (the widest on the market) and extending by a factor of 36x, which is the highest zoom ratio on the market as well. Image quality might be a bit soft -- that's in the nature of these kinds of cameras -- but the versatility will be tough to beat.

Sony's NEX-5 is just about the hottest mirrorless camera at the moment (late 2010). The slick, small magnesium polycarbonate body belies the huge image sensor inside, capable of capturing excellent shots in JPEG and RAW format, even at high ISO sensitivities (it maxes out at an impressive 12,800), as well as 1080i HD video. Not only is it the best-looking mirrorless camera, it takes some of the best shots as well. The point of the mirrorless genre when it debuted was to create cameras that could compete with the quality of dSLRs but looked, handled and weighed more like compact cameras. The NEX-5 (along with the NEX-3) is the sleekest incarnation of this idea yet, and is arguably the most likely to attract compact camera to buy.Sony Cybershot HX5V

The Sony HX5V has a stacked spec sheet, at least by last year's standards. It packs a 10.2 megapixel CMOS sensor, which allows for 1080i video and above-average low-light image quality. Like most Sony cameras, it packs a bunch of head-turning extras, too: GPS geotagging capability, iSweep panorama mode, in-camera HDR photography, and 10fps burst shooting. It's being replaced by the HX7V in the very near future; that camera has evolutionary, not revolutionary spec upgrades, so while the HX5V is still available at bargain-basement prices, we'd recommend scooping it up.
